Dignity Grows is an organization based and founded in Connecticut that focuses on ending period poverty. Period poverty is limited or uncertain access to basic menstrual hygiene products due to financial constraints. This issue is extremely important and is often not held on the same pedestal as other “more important” topics. I went to Dignity Grows’ National Summit on Period Poverty last weekend in Austin, Texas, and had an amazing time. I learned so much about how the system is pitted against issues like this and that is because our country is built on patriarchal values, and so if the topic does not fit into those constraints, it is not as urgent. The conference was over two days and included panels, discussions, and a keynote presentation from Soledad O’Brien.
